Lab-Grown Diamonds - What They Are and How They Compare to Mined Diamonds
Many people on social media and blogs are commenting and asking the question; "What are Lab-Grown Diamonds?” Since New World Diamonds is one of the largest Lab-Grown Diamond companies in the world, we wanted to take this opportunity to provide an answer once and for all. Lab-Grown Diamonds are the same as mined diamonds - period. They have the same chemical makeup. They are more affordable than mined diamonds. Now let's dive into the details a bit more.
Lab-Grown Diamonds are created by mimicking the earth’s natural process of extreme heat and pressure, yielding the same results in weeks instead of billions of years through a process known as Chemical Vapor Deposition, or CVD.
CVD Lab-Grown Diamonds are grown by placing a small diamond seed in a sealed chamber and heating until the temperature in the chamber reaches approximately 1000 degrees Celsius. When ultra-rich carbon gases like methane are introduced into the chamber, the carbon atoms in the gases begin to separate. The carbon atoms fall onto the diamond seed, building up layer-by-layer until they form Lab-Grown Diamond rough. Lab-Grown Diamonds are cut and polished using the same process as a mined diamond. It takes 6 to 10 weeks to create gem grade Lab-Grown Diamonds.
Lab-Grown Diamonds are not fake or imitation mined diamonds. They are physically and chemically identical to, and like-mined diamonds the quality of Lab-Grown Diamonds are measured by the traditional 4Cs; Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat.
