If the diamond has to be cleaved, it is sent to a cleaver. The process is carried out using another diamond as a cutting tool. The diamond that has to be cleaved is mounted in a dop and a steel wedge is inserted into the groove to split the diamond along its cleavage.
The sawing process is carried out with a paper-thin disc of phosphor bronze which rotates on a horizontal spindle and rotates 4000 revolutions per minute. The saw cuts through a 1-carat diamond within 4 to 8 hours. This process ensures the diamond attains a smooth and flat surface.
Girdling is also known as rounding or bruting. The diamond is placed in the chuck of a lid and spun while a second diamond is mounted in a dop against it to slowly round the diamond along its edges.
