Pink Legacy Diamond Sold!

Diamond history was made this week at an auction in Geneva, in which a massive, 18.96-carat pink diamond now named “The Pink Legacy” just sold for a record-breaking $50 million! We know it’s hard to fathom 19 carats, so for size comparison, think about the average engagement ring size in the US, which is around 1 carat. Now multiply that image about 19 times. Yep — we’re definitely impressed.

The Pink Legacy is an extremely rare diamond that is graded as "vivid", the highest rating for a pink diamond's color thanks to its highly saturated hue of blush. According to Fortune, “In general, pink diamonds are among just 2% of all diamonds. In the Fancy Vivid Pink range, fewer than 10% of pink diamonds weigh more than one-fifth of a carat.”  The purity of its color makes it even rarer. Pink diamonds, especially of this size, almost always have the secondary coloring of gray, orange, or purple hues. But not the Pink Legacy. Christie's International Head of Jewelry, Rahul Kadakia, said in a statement, "The saturation, the intensity of this stone is as good as it gets in a colored diamond. You may see this color in a pink diamond of less than one carat. But this is almost 19 carats and it’s as pink as can be. It’s unbelievable."
