5 Famous Diamonds That Originated in India

5 Famous Diamonds That Originated in India - New World Diamonds - fine jewelry, engagement rings and great gifts

While shopping for diamonds or diamond jewelry, we come across countless diamonds of different shapes, sizes, cuts, and whatnot? A natural diamond might undergo countless procedures and might pass through so many hands to reach you. On the other hand, lab created colored diamonds may have gone through intensive processes to gain those vivid hues.

Just like these diamonds, there are famous diamonds across the globe. They have a history dating back to ancient times. Some diamonds are found by accident while some are excavated with intense efforts. Today, we shall talk about the 5 famous diamonds that originated in the country of diverse cultures – India.

  1. Koh-i-Noor

The origin of Koh-i-Noor is estimated back to 5000 years. It was deemed to be found in the Kollur Mines of Andhra Pradesh. Koh-i-Noor is among the largest cut diamonds ever found and weighs about 105.6 carats. Ever since it was found, the Koh-i-Noor has been passed through various hands and has a violent history. The diamond was later acquired by the British and owned by Queen Victoria.

  1. Daria-i-Noor

Just like Koh-i-Noor, the Daria-i-Noor was found in the Kollur Mines. This diamond is yet another large diamond that weighs approximately 182 carats. It has the rarest hue, Pale Pink, which makes the diamond look breathtaking. Nader Shah, an Iranian ruler acquired the Daria-i-Noor and it today sits between the National Jewels of Iran.

  1. Moon of Baroda

This yellow-hued diamond was extracted in Vadodara, India, and was owned by the Gaekwad family. Moon of Baroda is a pear-shaped gemstone that traveled to America and has been part of a Marilyn Monroe film.

  1. Hope Diamond

The Hope Diamond is also believed to be discovered in the Kollur Mines of Andhra Pradesh. A French gem merchant Tavernier procured the diamond from India in 1666. It was later stolen in 1791, after which it was named as the ‘Hope’ diamond after being found in the Hope family’s gem catalog in London. The Hope Diamond is believed to be cursed to bring misfortune to its owner.

  1. Noor-ul-Ain

Noor-ul-Ain is one of the largest pink diamonds. It was found in the Vijayanagara Mines in India. However, Nader Shah captured this diamond along with the Daria-i-Noor.  Today, Noor-ul-Ain is among the Iranian Crown Jewels.
